Hallelujah – Leonard Cohen

Chords Used:

If you can stretch with your thumb, here is an alternative open chord to the F11 barre chord. Place your index finger on the B string 1st fret, your middle finger on the high E string 1st fret, your ring finger on the G string 2nd fret and fold the end of your thumb over the bass E string. Its a natural chord change from the Am as your index finger does not move off the B string (just back slightly) during the change.

Hi alan i really love this song, but i am kinda confused around the Halleluuu uu uu jah.
It would help a lot with a tab version of this song since we only got the chords.
Thank you i really like you work.

Alan, you have made picking up the guitar (at 59!) so much more enjoyable and less frustrating. I am SO grateful for your time and attention to detail! you are a gift for me..
i wonder if you might consider a bonnie raitt song i cant find any chords for –‘ been too long at the fair,’ and any eva cassidy — looking to find songbird.

I am again beyond grateful.. I am particularly thankful for the slow part at end of each song. YEAH for Alan, from colorado!

I literally just picked up the guitar about four days ago – I searched absolutely everywhere on Youtube for EASY instructional videos that I could follow along with. I knew nothing about the chords or frets, I was just planning on following hands…but then I found you! This site is fabulous!! Super easy, easy to navigate around. I’m learning soo very much already, thanks!! I will definitely stick with your site throughout my learning experience πŸ™‚

This is my new favorite site for learning songs. I am progressing with a couple of them. However I find it difficult sometimes to follow the finger pattern. I pause 3 times per second to make sure I get right the fret hand / playing hand combination. This is one place where Guitar Pro tabs are better for me.

Overall though this is way more captivating and fun.

Great and very concise tutorial. I want to play this song but I don’t know how in the world I can get the F11 down. I can barely bar the first fret with all my strength let alone fretting the G on the 2nd fret. Please tell me that with practice this chord can be played. Where do I start with the F11?

    • alan says:

Hi Robert, it does get easier with practice but if you click the Hallelujah option in the Tabs menu then scroll down a bit I have provided an alternative to the F11 which does not involve a barre chord. You may find this option easier for now. Best wishes – Alan πŸ™‚

I like that! I tried to play it like that at first when I realized I could not come close to baring the F11. I’m working my way down on bar chords. I’m having to start on the 9th or 8th frets as that means less string length to compress. I can decently bar the last 4 to 5 strings but as soon as I go to add the low e (all 6 strings) my b and high e mute out. My 3rd joint part of my index finger just won’t compress the 5th and 6th strings enough. I’m hoping that something is going to grow on the palm side of my index finger to allow me to dominate my guitar πŸ™‚

In fact I have just added it to the songsheet as well πŸ™‚

Thanks a lot for your lessons, Alan. I think lessons are very clear and instructive. I love music and now, at my age (48) i am learning to play guitar with you. I dont know what can i say to you to show how grateful i am, i listen your songs once and again and (though im not good with guitar) i practice a lot. Beautiful songs, excellent teacher. Thank you very very much. Excuse for my English (Im from Spain).
